Life Maths
Topic Overview
Stage 1 Essential Maths
Essential Maths offers students the opportunity to extend their mathematical skills in ways that apply to practical problem-solving in everyday and workplace contexts. Students apply their mathematics to diverse settings, including everyday calculations, financial management, business applications, measurement and geometry, and statistics in social contexts.
Topic Overview
For several types of income/remuneration (wage, salary, commission, piecework, Youth Allowance), students calculate weekly, fortnightly, monthly and annual gross pay. Students calculate individual income tax, Medicare levy and Superannuation liabilities and determine net income.
Students also search relevant awards and identify allowances and penalties for several entry level positions and contrast different types of employment (full-time/part-time/casual).
Students are given a hypothetical job and must calculate an initial weekly budget. Students will then prepare for moving out of home with activities such as, seeking rental accommodation, comparing personal loans for major purchases, preparing weekly meal plans and graphically representing their time management ensuring they maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Students complete a final budget including any adjustments to their work/living conditions required to balance their budget and rational of their choices (such as asking for more shifts, getting a second job, living in shared accommodation, applying for Youth Allowance / Rent Assistance etc).
Students investigate percentage recommended dietary intakes (RDI) of macro-nutrients for an average adult. Students utilise a product’s labelling to determine the nutritional quality of a product and make recommendations about its place in the Australian healthy eating guidelines.
Students ultimately plan and prepare a meal and create a nutritional label for their meal.
Students complete a series of construction techniques for several geometrical figures and shapes.
Students finally synthesise a design/picture combining at least 3 of the techniques presented. These are then recreated using illustrator and cut using the laser engraver.
